Here's a really good read.
Teens from California, Texas, New Jersey and Virginia among 100 high school students selected from thousands across country to participate in coveted mentoring event at Disney in March LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. Jan. 15, 2018 Five high school students were surprised live on Good Morning America today with the announcement that they were selected to be part of the exclusive Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and ESSENCE Magazine. Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney World Resort executive Tracey D. Powell joined the Good Morning America hosts and the studio audience for the surprise moment. National TV personality Steve Harvey also congratulated the teens on their accomplishment with a video message. Surprised live on-air were Ayanna Adams from Los Angeles, Christiana Okafor from Houston, Marquis Thomas from Virginia Beach, Va., Ava Marie Easter from Los Angeles and Sean Smith from Basking Ridge, N.J. The students, who sported T-shirts featuring the programs new logo during the surprise moment, are among 100 extraordinary youths from across the nation announced by Disney today to participate in its immersive, transformational four-day program, March 8-11, at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The program, which is entering its 11th year with a new Be100 campaign, highlights Walt Disney World Resorts continued commitment to the next generation of teens by inspiring them at a critical time in their development to make a difference in their lives and to relentlessly pursue and realize their dreams. Each of these 100 girls and boys has proven themselves to be exceptional as students and as human beings, so its an honor to have them join us at Walt Disney World Resort, said Tracey D. Powell, Walt Disney World Resort vice president of commercial management resorts and Disney Dreamers Academy executive champion. It is our hope that this potentially life-changing program will help create the next generation of great dreamers and achievers. Participating students, known as Disney Dreamers, embark on a journey throughout the Disney theme parks and behind the scenes, turning the vacation destination into a vibrant classroom for students to discover new careers, pursue their dreams and interact with Harvey and other motivational speakers and celebrities. Among the celebrities who have participated in the past are singers Patti LaBelle and Mary J. Blige, NBA legend and business mogul Magic Johnson, gospel music star Yolanda Adams, NFL superstar Cam Newton, plus TV personalities such as The Chew co-host Carla Hall, Good Morning America co-anchor Michael Strahan and ABC correspondent T.J. Holmes. Additionally, students participate in hands-on, immersive career-oriented workshops, ranging from animation to zoology. Each student is given important tools such as effective communication techniques, leadership skills and networking strategies. Inspiring our youth to dream big and chase those dreams is a personal mission, said Harvey. Having a dream is one of the most important things in life. That is why engaging with these students is an annual highlight for me, and the 2018 Disney Dreamers Academy will be no exception. Since 2008, Walt Disney World Resort has provided all-expenses-paid trips to more than 1,000 students, plus a parent or guardian, to participate in the annual Disney Dreamers Academy. The students are selected from thousands of applicants who answered a series of essay questions about their personal stories and dreams for the future. At ESSENCE, we are committed to impacting the leaders of tomorrow, said Michelle Ebanks, president of ESSENCE Communications. Every year, we continue to be impressed by the exceptional students selected for Disney Dreamers Academy, and it is our privilege to play a role in encouraging them to achieve their goals. The House Intelligence Committee voted Monday to release a memo detailing alleged surveillance abuses by the FBI and Justice Department, escalating a political fight between conservatives and the nation's intelligence agencies. The vote, which proceeded along party lines in the Republican-controlled committee, now means that President Donald Trump will have up to five days to review the material and decide whether to keep it secret, though he could agree to the release anytime before that deadline. If he does nothing, the committee can release the memo publicly. The Justice Department and the FBI are likely to lobby Trump in the interim, hopeful he will prevent the memo's classified contents from becoming public beforelawyers for those agencies can review the material. The intelligence committee also voted along party lines Monday against releasing a rebuttal memo from the panel's Democrats, who denounced both moves upon leaving the closed-door hearing. "We had votes today to politicize the intelligence process,'' said Rep. Adam B. Schiff, D-Calif., the committee's senior Democrat. He also said the committee is investigating the FBI and Justice Department, though a Republican disputed that characterization, saying that the panel is conducting oversight of those agencies. Rep. K. Michael Conaway, R-Texas, said that if the president supports the memo's release, it could happen as soon as Tuesday. He said the Democrats' counter-argument also may be released soon, but that he believes more lawmakers should read it first. A person familiar with the Democrats' document described it as a point-by-point rebuttal of the GOP memo about 10 pages long. The Republicans' effort was led by the intelligence committee's chairman, Rep. Devin Nunes (Calif.), who was not immediately available to discuss Monday's vote. Since Congress began to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election, Nunes has focused on alleged abuses of intelligence authorities by government agencies and former Obama administration officials. The GOP memo has become a flash point in the political battle surrounding efforts to understand the scope of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and whether any of Trump's associates coordinated with the Kremlin. Republicans say the document shows the investigation may be tainted by political bias. Democrats call it a cynical attempt to undercut the work of special counsel Robert Mueller and the law enforcement agencies behind him. Current and former intelligence officials have expressed concern that releasing the memo will harm national security. "I am heartsick, as should anyone be who cares about democracy and our nation's security," said Jeffrey Smith, a former general counsel at the CIA. The vote occurred hours after FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe - who became a symbol for Trump of what he considers the bureau's political bias - abruptly stepped down. Though McCabe's departure was expected, the timing caught many by surprise. It followed a recent meeting with FBI Director Christopher A. Wray at which they discussed the findings of an ongoing internal probe into McCabe's handling of the bureau's investigations into Hillary Clinton, according to people familiar with the matter. Trump has attacked McCabe for more than a year, blaming him for what he called political decisions about investigations. People familiar with the intelligence committee's memo say its main target is the FBI's relationship with Christopher Steele, a British ex-spy who was hired in 2016 by a Washington research firm to examine any connections between Trump and Russian leaders. The work, which was funded by Clinton's presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee, led to a dossier of allegations against Trump and some of his advisers - accusations the president has denied. Within the FBI, some of Steele's work was eventually incorporated into a 2016 application to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to conduct surveillance on Carter Page, a former Trump campaign adviser, according to people familiar with the matter. Republican lawmakers have suggested that Steele provided bad information to the FBI, leading to a broader probe of Trump associates. People familiar with the memo said it does not conclusively say whether Steele intentionally passed suspect information to the FBI, or simply made a mistake. But even before Monday's vote, the memo has strained relations between the White House and the Justice Department, and the Justice Department and Congress. The president wants the memo to go public. He has also told close advisers that the document is starting to make people realize how the FBI and the Mueller probe are biased against him, according to one person familiar with his remarks. The Justice Department, however, has come out against the memo's release before the agency can review the classified material in it. Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd wrote to Congress last week, warning lawmakers that releasing the memo without giving the Justice Department and the FBI an opportunity to review it "would be extraordinarily reckless,'' because doing so could harm national security and ongoing investigations. Since that letter was written, Wray was allowed to review the memo, though it has not been reviewed by the FBI's in-house lawyers, according to people familiar with the matter. The fight over the memo underscores a broader concern among U.S. intelligence agencies that the political tussles could cause longtime allies to share fewer intelligence reports. Several U.S. officials said there are growing concerns that congressional demands for classified intelligence, followed by efforts to make public some of that information, will lead foreign intelligence partners to restrict what information they share with the U.S. http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/orlandosentinel/~3/3VNEF9KYW50/ct-house-release-classified-memo-20180129-story.html This is probably the very best post we found all day long.

Residents said developers hoping to build 400 homes in the fast-growing Sorrento area of Lake County reached out to inform them about the proposed subdivision and were considerate about their concerns. Not many developers give residents an opportunity to look at the neighborhood plans, said Heather Brush, 59, of Sorrento, referring to developer Sorrento Pines LLC approaching them in November. They negotiated with us; they cared about the impact. But she and another couple who had been supportive because of concessions by the developer changed their minds after receiving a letter from Sorrento Pines they said amounted to a gag order not to bad-mouth the project. They presented that letter at the last minute, saying we had to sign, Brush told Lake County commissioners last week. We just thought it wasnt right. It made us a little suspicious what is coming that we dont know about? I dont understand what theyre so afraid of. The Sorrento area has been blitzed with development projects in the past few years because of its proximity to the Wekiva Parkway, which in 2021 will complete a long-awaited expressway loop around Metro Orlando. Commissioners didnt mention the letter in rejecting Sorrento Pines 4-1, saying instead that the density of two homes per acre was too high for that part of the county. At the meeting, Kathy Hattaway, a certified planner at the Orlando land-planning firm Poulos & Bennett, which submitted the application, defended the intent of the letter. The developer had agreed to a 100-foot buffer with raised elevation and shrubbery to separate the properties south of County Road 44, west of County Road 437. These property owners were offered a huge concession, significant dollars it was over a quarter million [dollars], she said. They were not imposing a gag order. The request is that they not speak against the project. Michael Barfield, a paralegal who consults primarily on First Amendment litigation, said the developer was within its rights. Its not against the law to buy someones silence Michael Barfield, a paralegal who consults primarily on First Amendment litigation. Its not against the law to buy someones silence, he said. Private parties can waive whatever rights they want. Brush and her neighbors Melinda and Jerry Rodriguez, who spoke highly of their initial meetings with Sorrento Pines representatives, said the letter made them think twice about the developers intentions. But Thomas Hewitt, a co-owner of Sorrento Pines, said his company was simply being responsive to the neighbors input. Essentially, were putting in many more dollars and time, so we just wanted to make sure they would be in favor of development, he said. Unfortunately, they didnt see it that way. The letter the Rodriguezes and Brush received a week before the project went before commissioners for consideration requested that they not express any opposition to Sorrento Pines to any Lake County staff member elected official media or other public outlet. Melinda Rodriguez said they didnt realize the developer was saying shut up or they were not going to give us what [we] wanted. I never thought it was going to come to that and I was very appalled. For commissioners, the big issue was the denseness of the proposed development. Youve heard the numbers, were going to get 100,000 people in Lake in the next eight to 10 years by some projections, Commissioner Sean Parks said. We can be picky, we can be a little choosy in what we do. While local governments are continuing to approve residential developments in Lake Clermont, for example, approved 300-plus homes on Hartwood Marsh Road this month others have raised the bar. Groveland, 30 miles west of downtown Orlando, recently rejected a plan that called for four homes per acre. Other Sorrento residents waged a campaign last year that prevented hundreds of rooftops being built in the area. Density was also an issue last year with the proposed Avington Park development in Sorrento, west of County Road 437 and north of Wolf Branch Road. That project also called for two homes per acre. The developer withdrew the proposal amid opposition from residents who preferred one home for every three acres. The most recent clash between developers and residents included a twist the request not to speak ill of Sorrento Pines. In good conscience, said Brush, who has lived in Sorrento for nearly 30 years, we could not sign. How to time travel: Pull the wooden spoon door handle. Take a whiff of stale cigarette smoke. Step inside. Allow your eyes to adjust to the dark room. Look around. Welcome to 1954. Welcome to Sarasota's Bahi Hut. Growing up in Orlando, I was lucky enough to have a grandmother that took me to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World every other weekend. My favorite land was, and still is, Adventureland. We even stopped by the Polynesian Resort once in awhile via monorail for a look around. My favorite cups to drink out of when I was a kid were old tiki and buddha glasses my mom bought at Goodwill. I still have a couple of them. As a young adult, I owned a rusty VW Westfalia camper bus with green shag carpet, bamboo curtains, and a shrunken head hanging from the rearview mirror. Needless to say, I've been a tiki fanatic since wayback. So, when I finally got the chance to visit the famous Bahi Hut in Sarasota, I was thrilled to visit a past I never lived but one I've dreamed of my entire life. The experience is truly like stepping back into time. Nothing seems to have changed since the bar opened in 1954. And I say this in reverence. Mid-century-modern light fixtures barely illuminate the room, but they do it gloriously. The same faded paneling, the same faded artwork, and the same "Polynesian" carvings hang on the walls. Oh, if those walls could talk. Of course there are island-themed drinks, but, alas, they don't come in ceramic tiki mugs. They are strong, however, very strong. In fact, there's a two-drink limit on the Mai Tai. Other libations include the Sneaky Tiki, the Scoobey Snack, and the Passionate Ultimate Screw. The only food option is a small dish of pretzels served with your cocktail. There is a vintage cigarette machine in the hallway to the bathrooms. So, I know tiki isn't for everyone. Not everyone can appreciate the truly remarkable era of the tiki lounge, the deliciously sweet and decadent cocktails, and the tiki motif that stole from Polynesian culture, mixed it with mid-century modern, and elevated it to art. Most simply regard tiki as quaint or cheesy, and the epitome of bad decor choices. Not everyone gets tiki, but I do, and I know there are many out there like me. Long live tiki and long live Bahi Hut. Take a look around... Bahi Hut is located on the north side of Sarasota on Tamiami Trail, and is a part of the Golden Host Resort hotel. Bahi Hut Golden Host Resort 4675 N. Tamiami Trail Sarasota, FL 34234 941-355-5141 http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/EatingOrlando/~3/bJXszcMPdy4/sarasotas-bahi-hut-tiki-bar-trip-back.html I agree with a lot of of what this writer mentioned but not all.
One of my favorite things about living in Florida is that there are ENDLESS possibilities for what to do on theweekend! When I lived in Virginia Beach, the only option was go to the beachunless it was cold, then you stayed inside and watched Netflix and prayed for a snow day home from work. Since moving to Orlando last January, my husband and I have done pretty well at exploring the sunshine state. After a full year of exploring under my belt, hereare my top 3 places to visit in Florida that are driving distance from Orlando. SARASOTA At just over a 2 hour drive from Orlando, Sarasota is the perfect gulf-side getaway. Ive been twice in the past year and both times were so much fun. The place that I stayed at iscalledLong Boat Key Club. This resort has all of the things that I look for in a perfect vacation spot: beautiful beach, pool, frozen drinks, outdoor activities, and lots of shopping and restaurants near by! Oh, and did I mention the sunset view from the resort? Enough said. My most recent trip to Sarasota was just last week with my mom, aunt and grandma. They decided they were tired of the cold up north and we set off to Sarasota for a few days. Although the weather was only in the 50-60s, we still had a great time! Here are a few pictures from the trip. 3 generations of family exploring Siesta Key Beach! Stapling our dollar to the wall at the local favorite spot in Siesta Key,Siesta Key Oyster Bar. This is my happy place! 2. TAMPA Pretty much a straight shot west of Orlando will take you to Tampa. At just over an hour and some change, its alocation thatcan be a one day or overnight trip and I have done both. My husband and I have been to Tampa 3 times in the past year and each trip was extremely different! Tampa has a wide variety of activities and Id like to think that we have experienced some of the best ones. Opening game for the 2015 Buccaneers football season. The Bucs arent very good but the game was fun! My loving husband humoring me at Cigar City Brewery. My favorite Florida beers are from here. Our most recent trip, celebrating my husbands birthday and Gasparilla weekend with donuts fromSOHO Donut Company. 3.MIAMI For me, Miami was a place that I knew I had to go to just so I could play Will Smiths Welcome to Miami as we pulled on to Collins Ave. in South Beach. And it was just as I imagined it would be. Beautiful people, gigantic houses, expensive restaurants, and TONS of people. We even convinced our Uber driver to take us into thegated neighborhood where Lil Wayne has a house! My husband and I visited Miamitwice, the first timefor our one year wedding anniversary back in September and then again as a day trip to see the Hokies play the University of Miami in October. Overall, our anniversary trip was great. We ate delicious food at fancy restaurants, sat on the beach and people watched, and picked out our future yacht. I dont think Ill be staying on South Beach again any time soon just because it was SO expensive and crowded, but Im glad that I got to experience it. Miami vs. Bills game at the Dolphins Stadium. The Bills won! Checking out Wakefield Brewing in theWynwood Arts District. Highly recommend stopping here! The lobby bar in our hotelCirca 39 Boutique Hotel. Really cool, modern vibe and great drinks. That about wraps it up for my favorite places in Florida! Im already making a list of places I want to go visit this year. First on the list is Key West, followed by St. Augustine. Wanderlust is real yall http://wardlando.com/2016/02/12/wardlando-wanderlust/ |
